I've got a bunch of spare parts around my house, so I threw 'em all together to make an 'internet' pc for my mother-in-law to use. Only needs to run Firefox/IE7 and have enough speed to get other minor tasks done.
It has:
AMD 1700 Processor
1gb of RAM
e-Geforce4 MX4000 Video Card (128mb)
40 gig-harddrive
It's going to run windows XP.
Do you think it'll have the speed? I think it comes out to a 1.5GhZ processing speed.
All I need is a powersupply and a reformat of the HD and I think its good to go.

If all you're going to do is surf, I'd just throw Ubuntu on it instead of Windows. It will run faster with lower end hardware.

The person using this is familiar with Windows and anything else would just confuse 'em.

You should take a look. Ubuntu uses gnome UI which looks very similar to windows and behaves like you would expect Windows to act. I wouldn't recommend it for a power user (although plenty use it) or gaming but if all you are doing is email and web surfing, it's ideal and freeeeeeeeeee.
